- Brain Injury Awareness Day offers a unique and valuable opportunity for survivors, family members, health care and legal professionals as well as the community to spend a day together to learn, network and refresh their commitment to improve the quality of life of those affected by brain injury.

Keynote Speaker
Carl Dixon, catastrophic injury survivor and rock musician.
Carl Dixon is a Canadian rock legend not only for the mere fact that he is still alive. As lead singer of Coney Hatch Carl toured with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest across North America. He later joined April Wine for four years and then was lead singer of The Guess Who for eight years. Carl's life was changed forever in 2008 by an horrific head-on car accident in Australia. Stressed and "emotionally impaired" Carl forgot that in Australia they drive on the other side. He suffered traumatic brain injury, fifty-two injuries in total and was assessed as having 75% loss of ability. Yet he's rebuilt a music career, become a published author and now an inspirational speaker. Carl's presentation is informative, musical, raw, honest and at times hilarious. An uplifting story of how our journey to the top is never a solo act.

Dawn Neumann, Ph.D., FACRM, Associate Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

A New Treatment Approach for Emotion Regulation After Brain Injury
Dr. Neumann is an Associate Professor at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Research Director at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI). She is also the Director of the IU Interactive and Functional Assessment of Communication and Emotion (InterFACE) Center at RHI. She has her PhD in Rehabilitation Science from SUNY Buffalo, and MA in Cognitive Psychology from Rutgers NJ.
Dr. Neumann’s research aims to identify mechanisms underlying social cognition and emotion regulation deficits after traumatic brain injury (TBI), as well as to determine evidence-based treatment approaches for these problems. She was the recipient of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) Deborah L. Wilkerson Early Career Award in 2013 and the Mitchell Rosenthal Mid-Career Award in 2018 for the significant contributions she has made to the field of Rehabilitation. Dr. Neumann serves on the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation editorial review board.
